Flaxseed Oil is a natural ingredient with many benefits. It can be grown sustainably, using organic agricultural standards without harming the environment.
Flaxseed, flaxseed oil and flax flour can all be found as single ingredient products on store shelves. Flaxseed oil is also occasionally used in natural and organic hair care products as well as moisturisers.
The first step in making Flaxseed Oil is to sort and select only the finest seeds because broken seeds will compromise on the quality of the oil. Then fine mud, sand and stones particles are removed. The seeds are then ground into smaller pieces to maximise oil yield and finally pressed in a screw-type press.
Flax, also known as “lin” is the plant from which linen fabric is made.
Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) is converted by the body into Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).
The ALA content of flaxseeds differ heavily depending on the cultivar being grown - from as little as 3% to as high as 70%. Health supplements are typically made using the high ALA varietals. The low ALA varietals are usually grown for use as wood treatments.
